Salem council approves backyard chickens – WTOP.com

SALEM, Va. (AP) – Keeping chickens in the backyard is now a legitimate activity in Salem.

The Roanoke Times reports that the City Council approved an ordinance that allows existing urban chickens.

Monday’s 4-1 vote ends nearly two years of debate and research on the issue. last year, the council considered banning chicken keeping in the city due to complaints from several neighbors. That drew protests from pro-chicken residents.

The new ordinance allows up to six chickens but no roosters. It prohibits the selling of eggs or chickens and restricts where coops can be placed on property.

Owners are to declare their chickens to the city by Aug. 1. they will have two years to bring their flocks and coops into compliance.
